This painting was commissioned by the subject Christine who is a lovely French Canadian lady living in Quebec. She contacted me by email after seeing some of my nudes in a web gallery and asked me to do a nude of her from photos. We had a few communication problems as she is French speaking and my French is somewhat limited. However, we worked it all out and we were both very happy with the result. In the photo she was wearing a black fur jacket and for some reason I kept thinking of Whistler and Tom Roberts paintings and all those dark portraits where the flesh seems so white. Lucian Freud is always an influence on my nudes. The result was as much a portrait as a nude.
